LIFE Vultures back to LIFE - Bright Future for Black Vulture in Bulgaria

Implementation period: August 2015 to June 2022

Implementation area: Bulgaria

Target Vulture species: Cinereous vulture

Summary

This project aims to establish a nesting population of the Eurasian black vulture in Bulgaria, through the reintroduction of the species in the Balkan Mountain range in Bulgaria – with first releases planned for 2018. The goal is to restore the connections between the sub-populations of this species in the Balkans (Greece), Crimea, the Alps and the Iberian Peninsula.

The project will support the further implementation of the Balkan Vulture Action Plan, through the improvement of nesting conditions, of the food base for vultures (strengthening wild rodent and herbivore populations and stimulating sustainable grazing practices), as well as working on anti-poisoning programmes and minimizing electrocution in powerlines.

Partners

Green Balkans - Stara Zagora NGO (leading partner), European Nature Heritage Fund, Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna, Consejería de Agricultura, Desarrollo Rural, Medio Ambiente y Energía - Dirección General de Medio Ambiente, Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF)

VCF main actions/activities in the project

  • Assessment of the current anti-poison activities in Bulgaria and establishment of protocols;
  • Development of strategy and adequate protocols for artificial feeding;
  • Securing and delivering Black Vulture for release in Bulgaria.
