The VCF is an international NGO, legally seated in the Netherlands. It is the successor of the Foundation for the Conservation of Bearded Vultures (FCBV), which was founded in 1992 by the president of Frankfurt Zoological Society (ZGF). FCBV united a network of vulture experts with the aim to establish a programme for breeding and reintroduction of Bearded vultures in the Alpine region (Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland). This became one of the most successful reintroduction programmes in the world (see ‘our work’).
The FCBV has always closely collaborated with the Black Vulture Conservation Foundation (BVCF) and other organizations, which are engaged for the conservation of vultures. In the framework of this network, which brought together many renowned vulture experts of Europe, the idea was born to found an organization which works for the conservation of all European vulture species. This vision became reality with the establishment of the ‘Vulture Conservation Foundation’, in 2009.
The Vulture Conservation Foundation consists of a Management Board of 7 professionals charged with the governance of the organization’s operations, and an Advisory Board, consisting of 15 vulture conservation experts from all over Europe that enable the Management Board to take sound and knowledge-based decisions and set the right priorities in its work for the conservation of European Vultures.
In February 2013 the VCF has hired a Director, and a financial/administrative assistant, to lead on the implementation of a development plan.
